Simple Living Challenge Day 11: Using Substitutions

Household Substitutions

One of my biggest money saving tips is to use household substitutions.  But it is also one of the best ways to keep things simple for cooking.  There are many items you can substitute for other ingredients.  I have often realized I am out of an ingredient and gone to the internet to find a substitutions.  Sometimes the taste of the meal is a bit different, yes.  But to me it is more important to not run out and buy a product at full price then it is to make something else work until it goes on sale.

There are many other things in your house that can be substituted.  You have many kitchen tools that you could use 1 item for 3-4 purposes.  We got rid of our electric chopper because we had lots of knifes and could do it ourselves.  We got rid of a lot of our multiple items to make room for the things we needed.  We got rid of out griddle and George Foreman grill because we could use a pan instead.  It make take a bit more time to cook, but it is not so cluttered in the kitchen so I WANT to be in there cooking.

You can also substitute cleaners.  This helps to keep your cleaners simple.  You don’t have a different cleaner for every area of your house.  It just isn’t needed.  So you get cleaners that you can use to substitute for each other.  Keep your number of cleaners down and make it so you can use them for other purposes.   Vinegar is a great item to have that has so many uses.  Baking Soda is another great one to have on hand.  Each of these can substitute for another cleaner and can be used as a substitute for many things.

What do you have in your house that you can substitute????
